  * Repeated pressure applied to the eye by a child with blindness or low vision. 
  * Presumably this pressure creates a [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phosphene|phosphene]] that is interesting to the child. 
  * It is not specific for one particular ocular disease
  * It was first mentioned by Theodor Leber in 1877 but identified as the oculo-digital phenomenon by Franceschetti in 1937
