Diamox (Acetazolamide) for Intracranial Hypertension

Dosing

  • Starting Dose: 15-25 mg/kg/day (divide BID to TID)
  • May be increased up to 100 mg/kg/day
  • Not to exceed 2g/day
  • May divide into BID or TID dosing

Side Effects

  • GI Upset
  • Metallic taste
  • SJS
  • Renal stones
  • Sickle cell crisis
  • SULFA allergy cross-reactivity
  • Aplastic anemia (idiosyncratic)
  • Decreased platelets
  • Hypokalemia / metabolic acidosis
  • Numbness / tingling fingers-toes-perioral

Additional Side Effects in Children

  • Decreased feeding
  • Wight loss
  • Lethargy

Contraindications

  • Sulfa allergy
  • Renal or liver disease
